The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced on Saturday the creation of a dedicated task force aimed at eradicating touting, extortion, and other illegal activities at the country’s airports.
FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, revealed this initiative during a press briefing in Lagos.
She voiced concerns over the persistent harassment and extortion faced by passengers and reiterated her commitment to providing a seamless and pleasant travel experience.
Henry Agbebire, Director of Special Duties at FAAN, has been appointed as the chairman of the newly established task force.
Kuku emphasized that she would personally engage with all government agencies operating at the airports to ensure strict adherence to the new measures against touting and extortion.
In her statement, Kuku underscored the administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards any form of misconduct. She warned that stringent disciplinary actions would be enforced against anyone found participating in illicit activities, declaring that it would no longer be business as usual.
To support the zero-tolerance policy, Kuku announced the establishment of magistrate courts at international airports to expedite the legal process for prosecuting offenders.
“The task force has been mandated to enforce discipline among airport staff and maintain a culture of professionalism at all levels.
“In addition, dedicated phone lines and QR codes will be set up to provide passengers with a means of providing feedback on their airport experience.
“All airport personnel must prominently display their on-duty cards and name tags for easy identification and accountability,” she said.
The FAAN Managing Director reaffirmed the authority’s dedication to providing exceptional service and maintaining a safe and secure environment for passengers and other airport users.
