A tragic incident occurred in Abia State as a three-story building under construction collapsed, resulting in the deaths of five workers.
The collapse happened Friday afternoon in the Umumbi Autonomous Community of Ukwa West Local Government Area.
Three carpenters working on the roof survived, but others were trapped under the debris.
Among the deceased were three workers plastering the ground floor and two siblings who had just arrived at the site.
The owner of the building is reportedly abroad, leaving his siblings to oversee the project.
Building expert Engr. Chinedu Okwara indicated that the collapse could be attributed to the use of substandard materials and the failure to employ a certified building engineer.
Ukwa West Local Government Area chairman, Newman Azu, confirmed the incident.
He stated that his team was on-site, coordinating efforts to bring in heavy-duty equipment for the rescue operation to free those trapped beneath the rubble.
