Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has approved N75,000 as the new minimum wage for civil servants in the state.
This development was announced by Christopher Arapasopo, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) chairman for Osun State, in a statement issued on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
The statement read: “The Organised Labour in Osun State and the Government, after exhaustive deliberations, have decided on N75,000.00 as the new minimum wage in Osun State.”
The approval follows months of negotiations between the Osun State Government and organized labour, which began after the Federal Government announced a new minimum wage of N70,000 in July 2024.
Osun joins a growing list of states that have surpassed the federal benchmark, including Benue State, where Governor Hyacinth Alia recently approved N75,000 as the minimum wage for workers.
According to Tersoo Kula, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alia, the implementation of the new wage in Benue will commence in November, alongside the resolution of outstanding arrears.
“We are implementing a new national minimum wage of seventy-five thousand naira (N75,000). We decided to set the wage at N75,000, fully aware of the other concerns raised by organised labour during the negotiations,” Governor Alia stated.
“These concerns included a minimum wage of thirty thousand naira, wage awards, transportation allowances, tax relief, and work-off days, among others. Recall that the President had approved the sum of N70,000, which we have decided to exceed, considering the concerns raised by organized labour regarding our ability to pay.”
