Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume is currently in a closed-door meeting with ministers regarding the planned nationwide protest against economic hardship by Nigerian youths.
The emergency session includes over 40 ministers from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet. Notable attendees include Nyesom Wike (FCT), Yusuf Tuggar (Foreign Affairs), Zephaniah Jisalo (Special Duties), Tahir Mamman (Education), Abubakar Bagudu (Budget and Planning), Wale Edun (Finance), Mohammed Idris (Information), Bello Matawalle (Defence), David Umahi (Works), and National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu.
Earlier today, President Tinubu appealed to Nigerians to cancel the #EndBadGovernance protest set for August 1. Despite his plea, the protest against economic hardship, organized by anonymous groups, has gained momentum on social media and is planned to occur across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The nation has been grappling with severe inflation and economic challenges, exacerbated by the government’s removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of forex windows, leading to soaring prices of food and basic commodities.
