A Nigerian man has called off his wedding after being presented with a traditional bride price list that he deemed excessively demanding.
The list, reportedly valued at ₦3.5 million, included a variety of items such as crates of drinks, livestock, clothing, and monetary gifts for members of the bride’s extended family.
The story, shared by social media user Princess Adeola, has ignited widespread debate over cultural practices and their impact on modern relationships.
According to Adeola, the prospective groom was initially enthusiastic about the marriage, even planning to take his bride abroad and sponsor her education.
However, his excitement turned to heartbreak when he discovered that the bride herself supported the high demands made by her family. Citing the rising cost of living in Nigeria, the bride reportedly endorsed her family’s list, leaving the groom disillusioned.
Adeola sympathized with the man’s situation, describing him as a “good man” who was genuinely committed to his partner. She expressed concern over what she perceived as “greed” on the part of the bride’s family, urging women to advocate for more reasonable expectations in marriage negotiations.
Many social media users weighed in on the matter, with opinions divided. While some defended the traditional bride price as an important cultural practice, others criticized it as a financial strain and an obstacle to relationships.
The debate has sparked renewed discussions on the relevance and practicality of such customs in contemporary society.
