President Bola Tinubu has returned to Nigeria after completing his official visits to China and the United Kingdom.
His aircraft landed in Abuja late on Sunday night following the extensive diplomatic engagements abroad.
Tinubu departed from Abuja for Beijing, China, on August 29, where he commenced his official visit on Tuesday, September 2, by meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People.
“He started his official visit on Tuesday, 2 September, with a meeting with President Xi Jinping in the Great Hall of the People.
“While in China, President Tinubu was warmly received by his host with 21-gun salute and a guard of honour was mounted for his inspection,” Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said in a statement on Saturday.
During the visit, Nigeria and China signed five key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), including agreements to foster cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, promote peaceful nuclear energy usage, and enhance human resource development as part of the Global Development Initiative. Additionally, MoUs were signed to boost media exchange between China Media Group and the Nigerian Television Authority, and for the construction of the 68 km Lagos Green Rail Line by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).
“A memorandum of understanding for the 1 billion dollar iron ore-to-steel project planned for Kogi State was also signed between Chart and Capstone Integrated Limited of Nigeria and Sinomach-He of China,” Onanuga added.
President Tinubu’s itinerary in China also included visits to major Chinese companies such as Huawei and CHEC, where further discussions were held on infrastructure development and cooperation. At the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), Tinubu delivered a keynote address emphasizing the importance of multilateralism and cooperation for global peace.
He capped off his visit with a meeting with the Nigerian Diaspora Organisation in China, where he discussed his administration’s reform agenda, aimed at transforming Nigeria’s infrastructure and governance systems.
“President Tinubu left Beijing for London, where he spent some days. On Thursday, he met with King Charles III, where he discussed issues related to climate change and action,” Mr Onanuga said.
Following these high-level engagements, Tinubu returned to Nigeria to continue his administration’s efforts on the domestic front.
