Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points after a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Southampton.
Despite facing the league’s bottom club, Jurgen Klopp’s side had to dig deep to secure the win in a match that proved far more difficult than expected.
The first half saw Liverpool control possession with patient passing, though Southampton managed to disrupt their rhythm with occasional counterattacks. The hosts’ high-risk style of playing out from the back eventually backfired. Dominik Szoboszlai capitalized on a mistake by Flynn Downes, curling in a brilliant opening goal.
Southampton responded with an equalizer through Adam Armstrong, who converted a rebound after Caoimhin Kelleher saved his penalty. The spot-kick was awarded following a VAR review of a foul by Andy Robertson on Tyler Dibling.
Dibling played a key role again early in the second half, as his precise cross-field pass launched a rapid counterattack. Armstrong delivered an assist to Mateus Fernandes, who finished calmly to give Southampton the lead.
Liverpool fought back ten minutes later, with Mohamed Salah delivering a masterclass in finishing. He volleyed Ryan Gravenberch’s long pass past goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to level the score. In the final moments of the game, Yuki Sugawara’s handball led to a penalty, which Salah expertly converted to secure the 3-2 win.
The victory further solidified Liverpool’s position as Premier League title contenders, showcasing their composure and quality under pressure.
