Nigeria’s Super Eagles concluded their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a 2-1 loss to Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Despite the defeat, Nigeria retained the top spot in Group D and secured qualification for the tournament in Morocco.
The match, held on Monday evening, marked Rwanda’s first-ever victory over Nigeria in an international fixture. However, Rwanda’s historic win was not enough to earn them a place in AFCON 2025, as Benin Republic claimed the group’s second qualification spot with a goalless draw against Libya in Tripoli.
Match Highlights
The Super Eagles, already assured of qualification, took the lead in the 59th minute through Samuel Chukwueze’s stunning solo effort. Chukwueze dribbled past three defenders before calmly slotting the ball past Rwanda’s goalkeeper, Fiacre Ntwari.
Rwanda responded with two quick goals to turn the game around. Ange Mutsinzi equalized in the 72nd minute with a powerful header, and Innocent Nshuti scored the winner just three minutes later, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by Nigeria.
Earlier in the game, Victor Boniface had a golden opportunity to put Nigeria ahead, but his header from Moses Simon’s corner was expertly saved by Ntwari. Kelechi Iheanacho also came close in the first half, but his left-footed shot was parried away by the in-form Rwandan goalkeeper.
Final Standings
Despite the loss, Nigeria finished as Group D winners with 11 points from six matches. Rwanda ended their campaign with eight points, while Benin advanced on goal difference.
The 2025 AFCON tournament is scheduled to take place in Morocco, with Nigeria aiming to improve on their past performances and reclaim their status as three-time champions.
