President Bola Tinubu and First Lady, Remi Tinubu, began their participation in the 2024 G20 Leaders’ Summit with an official visit to the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The visit marked the opening activities of the summit, hosted by President Lula da Silva, Brazil’s leader and the current G20 Chair.
The 19th G20 Summit is being held from November 18 to 19 under the theme, “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.
” The agenda focuses on sustainable development across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. It also includes discussions on critical global issues such as climate change, digital transformation, and governance reforms.
President Tinubu’s participation, following an invitation from President Lula, highlights Nigeria’s active role in addressing global challenges and pursuing socio-economic reforms. He is expected to hold strategic bilateral discussions with other world leaders to advance Nigeria’s economic transformation agenda and attract investment opportunities.
The summit provides a platform for leaders to deliberate on pressing international concerns, including the Israel–Hamas conflict and rising tensions between the United States and China. According to the Brazilian presidency, these discussions will culminate in outcomes reflecting extensive diplomatic negotiations over the past year.
The G20 consists of 19 member countries, including major economies such as the United States, China, Germany, India, and South Africa, along with the European Union.
This year’s summit is notable for welcoming the African Union as a permanent member, a move aligned with President Lula’s vision to tackle critical issues like food security and eradicate extreme poverty by 2030.
By participating in the summit, President Tinubu continues to position Nigeria as a key player in global economic and diplomatic discourse, underscoring the importance of international collaboration in tackling shared challenges.
